Pearl of Wisdom:
“When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the LORD your God.”
– Leviticus 23:22
GOD HAS ALWAYS HAD A HEART for those facing poverty, perhaps especially women. One must simply remember the Old Testament story of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi to see this is true. Living in a foreign land, Naomi’s husband had died. Her sons, including Ruth’s husband had passed away as well. Without provision, Naomi encouraged her daughters-in-law to go back to their families of origin. But Ruth stayed loyal to her mother-in-law as well as Naomi’s God in following her back to her homeland in hopes of survival.
Here the women encountered a system of social justice that gave them a new life. Israelite landowners were commanded by God’s law to leave the edges of their fields for the poor to harvest. This was not a system of handouts, but a system of opportunity which when met with the willingness to work, would provide the needy with a dignified living.
What if God’s solution to poverty isn’t just a handout, but opportunity created through generosity?
While we are certainly called to provide food and shelter to those in need, it is worth pondering the way Ruth’s diligence met Boaz’ law-inspired generosity to create beauty from ashes. What might such a system look like today?
Insight to Action
