Pearl of Wisdom:
“The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.”
(This line opens Chapter 31 of The Book of Proverbs)
KING LEMUEL’S MOTHER CLEARLY MADE AN IMPRESSION on her son. And by that impression, she influenced the world for generations to come. Her wise advice is featured among the Biblical sayings of the wisest and richest man in history, King Solomon. Her words are recorded for all time in the Book of Proverbs. All mothers have astounding influence – which of course includes you, and me – a truth both inspiring and intimidating. While our influence may sometimes seem so very limited, let us not be deceived. Those little ears listening to our everyday words may one day grow to hold a crown.
The pearls of wisdom we give our children today hold the power to enrich them & generations to come.
Insight to Action
One small way I try to pass wisdom onto my children is through a simple morning routine. While we sit around the breakfast table, I ask my kids for today’s date. We then find the corresponding chapter of Proverbs in my Bible (Chapter 1 for the 1st of the month, Chapter 2 for the 2nd, etc.) And either I or one of my sons begins to read it. When something sticks out to one of us, we discuss its meaning and the wisdom contained in the verse.
I don’t always find time to work this into the busy mornings, but when I do it always feels so rewarding. This little habit has led to some of the best conversations we’ve ever had.
Now I’d love to hear from you. Have you found a way to regularly pass wisdom on to your children? If you have, please share it below to help inspire others. If you haven’t yet created this powerful habit, think of a small routine or special project you could weave into the fabric of your family’s time together. Resolve to start as soon as you can, and let me know below, so I (and all who read it) can lift up your intentions in prayer.
